Day 151 - Feels Like Wednesday

156.5 on the scale. 80 minutes on the walking path, 5.7 miles, 4.3, 100/70.

Hmmm, apparently I took an easier pace today. I went the other direction towards the lake this morning, and saw a pretty big turtle, as Lake Minnetonka turtles go anyway. Also exchanged pleasantries with John again today.

Have a pretty low key day in terms of meetings, which is nice. Have a lunch with a colleague from another company, an internal presentation which I'm excited to see, and another meeting over drinks this afternoon.

In between all that I'll be pushing some pixels in Photoshop, YAY!

Day 150 - Lots of OK

156.5 on the scale. 65 minutes on the walking path, 5.0, 4.6, 100/70.

Invigorating walk out there this morning. Saw John and said hi again. He had a good three-day weekend he says, and you'll be perhaps interested to know he changed it up and wore a white cap this morning.

Little to report from my fronts. I got a fair amount of sleep last night, but I've found myself with a lot of projects on my lap again so I might have to switch the engines back on, and perhaps even the afterburners later in the week.

I wish everyone a spectaculariffic day, and a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to those of you who happen to have been born today — it seems like it is going to be a good day on which to have been born.

Day 149 - Tuesday is the New Monday

154.0 on the scale. No exercise.

Woke up late after not enough sleep, had to quick get the kids up and ready for school, then rush off to pick up Jo at the airport, then rush back to the house to meet with a siding guy, then rush to the office in time to rush out to a Target meeting.

It is going to be one of those days, a lot of rushing without much of getting anything done.

All that said, how 'bout that? 154?!

Day 148 - Bachelor Monday

155.5 on the scale. About 70 minutes on the walking paths, 5.0 miles, probably about 4.6, 100/70.

Didn't pay much attention to the details on the walk this morning, just to the tunes.

So I made a GREAT salad last night. I marinated some shrimp in tequila lime with some spices, then grilled it and layed it on a bed of lettuce, corn, cheese, southwest black beans, peppers, tomatoes, crushed corn chips and then made a salsa vinaigrette and ranch sour cream to top it with.

Deeeeeamn, it was tasty. (And the pitcher of margaritas I made to go with it was tasty too!)

So, Jenny Sue has got Jo-Anne all set up on Live Spaces now with a blog and everything. She's totally geeking her out, but we'll see if it sticks, eh?

I'm about to shower and head out to Borders and Barnes & Noble to do some research for some HAM branding, then I'm all about fixing holes in the sheetrock walls today. Wheeeee!

Whoooo Are You? Ooooh Oooh, Ooooh Oooh

Yea, I really wanna know.

Alright, there are some peeps that visit this blog regularly, are not family, not friends (that I know of anyway), and I think that's pretty cool. But you don't leave any comments or anything that leaves any sort of clue as to your identity, or why you're even interested in the first place.

I wanna know who you are!

So, if you see your city listed down in this list below, will you leave a little comment? Give me some idea how I can get to know you and who you are, and why you even care?

Albany, NY
Santa Clara, CA
Mount Laurel, NJ
Auburn, MA
Eugene, OR

Maybe I already know you, but don't know it?

Just curious and stuff.

I Am a Geek

So, I just finished mowing the lawn, and I am officially physically exhausted.

I'm a geek because while mowing the lawn, I wore my Garmin doohickey, which told me that the sum total of walking you have to do behind a 40-50 pound mower to mow the entire yard is just short of 1.5 miles.

Howzabout that?

Day 147 - Weigh-In Day!

156.5 on the scale. 130 minutes on the walking path (with new shoes), 10 miles, 4.6, 0/0.

I'll do some sit-ups and push-ups later, I'm beat. That's the longest I've walked so far, and I've created a new blister on my other foot, on my big toe. Awesome.

Next up, mowing the football field we call our lawn. I'm totally going to geek out doing it too, by wearing my Garmin thing-a-ma-bob so I can tell how far you gotta walk to mow the whole lawn.

Bret = dork.

Day 146 - Bachelor Saturday

155.5 on the scale. 60 minutes on the walking path, 4.8 miles, 4.8, 100/70.

I'm sitting at Ruby Tuesdays having the salad bar and a beer for lunch after having been turned away from the Memorial Blood center as unfit to donate. :)

I got suckered by a telemarketer to make an appointment, but they deferred me when I told them I'd been in Mexico, south of Cancun within the last year. Apparently I visited a malaria risk center.

Oh well, no bloodloss for me!

Also, sitting by myself in Ruby Tuesdays I had an interesting convo with the waiter. He's 19, was a little bit hung over, and is dating a girl who just recently got out of a four year relationship so they're taking it slow, and he threw an awesome party last night at which he charged $5 to get in, and had some 60 people packed into a one bedroom apartment, and netted out like $100 in profit. His friend got a black eye because there was a punk there that wouldn't leave the girls alone and got ejected by all the guys, at which point he threw a punch that clipped his friend's eye. The punk stole a 1.75 bottle of something as well as a case of pop on his way out the door. His new taking-it-slow girlfriend is being nice enough to clean the whole apartment for him while he works.

You can learn a great deal about people just by saying hello and meaning it. :)

Day 145 - Bachelorhood Eve

155.0 on the scale. 65 minutes on the walking path, 5.0 miles, 4.6, 100/70.

Took the risk of walking on the blister again. Biking is good, but walking is more satisfying for me.

Had coffee with a colleague this morning at Dunn Bros, then headed back home to work for a bit before I take Jo to the airport.

After an afternoon at the office, so will begin my 3 days of bachelorhood in a big, empty house. I've got stuff to do around the house and for work and stuff, but it'll be nice to be 100% on my own schedule, following my whims about the house and the city.

Maybe I'll sleep in the treehouse. :)

Happy Birthday to MOM!

Quote of the Day

"Don't just do something, stand there."

(But thanks Charlotte!)

Day 144 - Rainy Days and Thursdays

157.0 on the scale. No exercise because it is raining.

I would have liked to take a long walk today. I'm feeling kinda introspective today.

Not much to share at the moment I guess, so rather than blather on about nothing, I'll save the 1's and 0's for when I have something to say.

Have a good rainy day!

Exercise Report

63 minutes biking on the paths, 14.6 miles, 14.0, 100/70.

Man, why is it everything smells better after a hard rain? Wow.

Have I mentioned I love where I live?

Day 143 - Hump Day

156.5 on the scale, no exercise (unfortunately) so if it isn't thunderstorming, I aim to take a long bike ride this evening if I'm able.

No exercise because I got up early this morning to prep for that phone interview for The Business of Design book, which happened this morning. It was a good conversation, but was cut short by a client meeting at Target. The guy has some more questions for me and wants to schedule another call.

Anyway, the rest of today I get to sit in front of Photoshop and design some stuff. I like getting back to that every now and then, though I shouldn't probably be doing any of it in my role anymore.

My long weekend all alone is less alone now, at least on Saturday night. I was invited to a barbecue at my aunt's house, which is always fun. All three cousins are home from college (2) or work (1) (from Colorado, southern MN and New York [where one of them works for Vera Wang -- schmancy!]) so I'm sure there will be good food, some volleyball and as much beer as I can safely consume without having to stay overnight. ;)

Oh, and probably cigars. Naughty, I know, but YAY!

*cough cough*

Quote of the Day

With one foot already in the front elevator in our building I noticed the building maintenance manager walk by, so I gave him a little shit about his planned retirement this summer.

His only response as my other foot entered the elevator: "Oh, that thing's workin' again?"

Nice.

As the doors closed on me, the stairs sounded mighty attractive.

Day 142 - Afternoon Matinee of Obscurity

155.5 on the scale. 38 minutes biking on the paths (said "hi" to John who also remembered my name), 8.3 miles, 13.1, 100/70.

I got a blister under my original blister from the walk yesterday. I'll be biking for a few days now, to hopefully let it heal a little.

Had an early morning coffee meeting with a colleague about speaking at the upcoming MIMA Summit. I'm penciled into the schedule, early October. Likely topic: "The Strategy Behind F-U-N", or something like that.

On a somewhat related note, I'm being interviewed for an upcoming book called The Business of Design. Hope to sound really smart, but I'll probably get a little Tao on him too. :)

Maybe those two things have something to do with what I'm to take from that quote in Tao Te Ching the other day.

Name's beginning to be distinguished? Time to withdraw into obscurity.

*poof*

This afternoon, the whole company is shutting down at 3:00 and going to see Shrek the Third.

YAY!

Heroes Season Finale

Well, it is done. I'm happy to have got hooked on a show again, it has sort of been a long time.

It was a good ride, and now I have one to look forward to again next fall.

I don't know if you saw it, but wtf was up with the volume two teaser?

See, that's what they wanted me to say.

Brilliant!

Day 141 - Harmonious Morning

156.0 on the scale. 65 minutes on the walking path, 5.0 miles, 4.7, 100/70.

The walk this morning was quick, but splendid. The weather was perfect, the music perfect, and I was bookin' it.

I saw my Mother Goose and her feathery family as well, and managed not to get lunged at. I am happy to say I faced my fears and took a picture for posterity's sake.

Also, stopped a friendly older dude in an orange cap and a cane that I see almost every morning I go that direction. I pulled the headphone from my ear, reached my hand out and said "I see you so often out here I think we better know each other's names." So I officially met John, Mr. Orange Cap.

Now I can greet him by name.

Bret, a Squirrel, and a College Campus

So that story I was talking about.

Once upon a time on a campus far far away (actually, just in Moorhead, MN)... On a sunny but still crisp spring day as I was walking from one class to another along the edge of the "mall" -- a central long courtyard of sorts surrounded by trees and shrubs and criss-crossed with sidewalks -- I noticed a little squirrel a bit ahead of me who was a few feet up on the base of a tree that was maybe 4 or 5 feet off the sidewalk.

Still on the sidewalk, as I neared the tree the squirrel started climbing down, right in plain sight instead of circling to the backside of the tree in the usual squirrelly fashion.

As I got even closer, the little bugger started walking right towards me. A little bit cautiously, but right up to me until it was within about 2 feet, just off the sidewalk.

So I stopped.

I stopped and I crouched down, which stopped him in his tracks. From here, I could see he was a pretty skinny little thing. Maybe young, like a thin little teenage squirrel or something.

I held out my hand and made the little ticking sound with my tongue, and was surprised that he didn't just tear off back to the tree or anywhere else but where I was. I was also a little nervous like, "what if this thing thinks I'm gonna hurt it and bites me?" but I figured, "No way, squirrels don't lunge at you, they just run away." To my surprise, he let me inch a little bit closer to him, and actually taking a couple steps closer to me, got on his haunches and sniffed my hand.

Holy!

By now, some other students that were walking by noticed, and were watching to see what epic battle might be about to occur between Man (boy?) and Squirrel. Perhaps even to laugh at the idiot sticking his hand in front of a wild animal like that.

BUT, no such cause for alarm! The squirrel let me touch him, then walked right up to my foot and stepped onto my shoe.

I'm not even kidding -- was a little surreal.

After that, I wondered if he'd actually let me pick him up, so I cautiously wrapped my fingers under his little belly at which point I felt exactly how skinny this little dude was. He fidgeted a little bit, but let me pick him up and put him on my jeans where he sort of clung to me with some seriously sharp claws, and just sniffed around a little bit, letting me pet his head. How cool was this??

Now the couple of people watching were ooohing and awwwing, I think as surprised as I was about what was actually happening.

After a handful of minutes of this amazingness, I had to move on. Get to class. This was so worth stopping for, but I was already late. So, I slipped my fingers back under the little fella, peeled his sharp claws off my jeans, and set him down on the sidewalk then stood up and took a step or two back.

I'll be damned if the little dude didn't scurry right back to my shoe, climb on, and then start up the leg of my jeans.

Shit! Now what was I gonna do? I had made a friend apparently.

After one more attempted separation and immediate re-engagement, the now handful of people watching were like "Wow. He likes you!" I put him on my sweatshirt and stood up, asking what they thought I should do.

One of them suggested I take him to the Biology department, and let them maybe fatten him up and release him back to the "wild" or something. That sounded like as good an idea as any and the biology department was only a couple hundred feet away or so, so they wished me luck and I was on my way.

I got there and told them about the little adventure, at which point they told me that the squirrel population experienced a significant shortage of food over the preceding winter and this early spring, and the little guy was probably hoping I'd give him some food or something. They admitted, it was pretty ballsy of him to do that, and that probably meant he was very desperate.

Ouch. I hurt for the little guy.

So I asked if I could leave him with them and they could care for him.

And now's the point in the story where I should let the amazingness of the adventure just soak in a little bit more, as it has done for me over the years. I mean, this was really unique. Nothing similar has happened to me before or after, nor has anyone told me a similar story about their making the acquaintance of such a squirrel-friend.

All that in mind, the next part is something that I wish would have happened differently.

After I asked if they could take care of them, they said they were sorry, but they weren't really set up for such things and would likely have to just put him down.

I felt like I had little choice but to leave him there with them, so that's what I did. I think I left saying "I'm going to go, and pretend I don't know what you're going to do..."

I should have taken him back outside and tried to set him free again, but instead I think I caused the end of his hunger permanently.

Poor little squirrel.

I think about him sometimes.

Quote of the Day

From the Tao Te Ching: "When the work is done, and one's name is becoming distinguished, to withdraw into obscurity is the way of heaven."

I don't know exactly what meaning I'm to take from it, but something about that is pretty tasty to me.

Day 140 - Weigh-In Day

156.5 on the scale. 110 minutes on the walking path, 8.6 miles, 4.7, 100/70.

Man, the walk felt good today, didn't do it yesterday so had to get out there today. Good thing I did it this morning because it is raining now, despite them having forecasted a sunny 80-degree day. It is like 50. 80 seems WAY out of reach.

I was reminded this morning on the walk of another one of those memories that sticks with you. I have to get ready to go to the boy's piano recital so can't tell the story now, but it involves me, a squirrel, and a college campus.

Tee hee.

Day 139 - Life in a Cage

157.0 on the scale. No walking er nuttin' yet, which is making me kinda squirmy.

Made some tasty Oatmeal Apple Pancakes this morning, and then spent the morning chillin' more than I should have, until we went to the Spring Hill School May Fair around 12:30. Hung out there and watched the kids perform and do activities, I participated in kids against the adults tug-of-war in which the kids kicked our bums, and Cole kicked some individual butt doing double-dutch the longest out of anyone in his class.

I learned a new term today, that comes out of scooter enthusiasts: "Cage".

Used in a sentence, it goes like this:

"On a beautiful day like today, it makes no f'in sense to ride in a cage when you don't have to be."

Or, "I get on the road and I'm surrounded by people in cages -- big cages, little cages, SUV cages -- and I just feel so sorry for them."

That's good stuff. Thanks Barry Brodski. :)

Day 138 - Quiet Friday

157.5 on the scale. No exermacise.

It was raining this morning, and I mistakenly thought that I had an 8:30 coffee meeeting that's actually next week Friday, so I rushed off to the office early today.

Pretty quiet Friday so far. I think we're at the tail end of the calm before a storm of project work, so I'll take this quiet Friday and savor it for all it is worth.

Hummels have a busy weekend ahead of us. Kid's school has May Fair tomorrow, Cory's gonna go see Shrek 3 with a friend afterwards, and Jo's got her moms group coming over for drinks and bonfire and movies and stuff. So, me and the boys will sort of have to make ourselves scarce tomorrow night.

Then Sunday, the boys have a piano recital. I'm hoping I can squeeze in a good long walk somewhere in there if the blister isn't bugging the crap-o-la out of me. And then mowing and such of course. Maybe we can get the boat out on Sunday too if we get up really really early.

Happy Friday, and if you don't read me over the weekend, have a good weekend!

Conversation of the Day

Jo, on the cell phone with me just now:

Jo: "Where are you?"

Bret: "In a coffee shop, writing a creative brief."

Jo: "You're making a plate of beef???"

Bret: "Yes, that's what I'm doing. I'm making a plate of beef."

Day 137 - Blister Badness

157.5 on the scale. 60 minutes biking on the paths, 13.0 miles, 13.0, 100/70.

So, I have a big-ass blister on my left foot, from my cheap-o tennis shoes it would seem. To give it a break, I biked instead. Boy, that uses a whole different batch of muscles. My legs were all wobbly going up and down the stairs after I got back to the house.

But it was kinda fun. Maybe I'll mix it up some between bike and walking, at least until this blister goes away.

Oh, and get a new pair of shoes.

I'm sitting at a coffee shop this morning working on a creative brief. I like caffeine.

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

Day 136 - New Dawn

156.0 on the scale. 105 minutes on the walking path, 8.5 miles, 4.85, 100/70.

Today is 300% better than yesterday. I had a long long walk free of any altercations with geese, and am now sitting in a Caribou (where I won't spill coffee on my pants) getting a little bit of work done before another school tour at 11:00 with Jo.

I was really bookin' it this morning I guess -- .25 MPH faster than usual. Must've been the tunes and the beeeeeeeeautiful day. I walked all the way to the corner in Excelsior which takes me by the lake on many occasions, felt good.

Anyway, after the school tour, I'll have lunch with my wife, and then head back to the office for a conf call (which I will NOT be late for) and an afternoon meeting (which I KNOW is at the client's office).

Now that's a good day.

Comparatively anyway.

Bad Day Diffused

Okay, so I took out the day on my car tonight. Cleaned that MF like nobody's business.

I'm talkin' shop vac, leather wipes, Fabreeze, even Sol-U-Mel. I was not messin' around.

That is so not like me, but I feel better.

Pete (the PT Cruiser) needs a good outside wash, but inside, he's spotless.

Yeah, totally like me.

What??

Day 135 - Can I Get A Do-Over?

158.5 on the scale. 45 minutes on the walking path, dunno how far, dunno how fast, 100/70.

Wow. I would like to rewind about 4 hours and start this day completely over. Here's what's happened so far:

1) Got accosted by Mother Goose on the walking path (ref: previous post)
2) Left the house too late to get to a 9:00 conference call on time, so had to have them dial me in on my cell phone
3) After arriving and while sitting in our parking garage on said conference call, I picked up my Caribou Coffee, the lid popped off, and I spilled ALL over my pants and my car. Sticky, coffee, dampness, yuck.
4) HAD to drive home to change and do a quick-clean of my car.
5) Which consequently made me arrive at the office 9 minutes late for a 10:30 meeting that I thought was here, which was actually AT the client's offices.

Good god, what kind of example am I?

To my employees, my clients, my friends, family... geese everywhere... I'm sorry.

Let's hope the day smooths out. My planets are apparently out of alignment or something.
Holy fuck, I just got charged at on my walk by a goose with goslings! It went airborn on me and got within 18" of my arm!

Treadmill Report

50 minutes on the treadmill, 3.75 miles, 4.5, 100/70.

Only one more heroes left, next week!

Day 134 - Busy Weekend, Mild Monday

156.5 on the scale. 70 minutes on the walking path, 5.0 miles, 4.3, 100/70. My left foot started hurting something fierce for some reason, so didn't go as fast today.

Just 100/70 on Sunday, no walking.

So, we had an eventful Mother's Day weekend. We headed to Cory's violin recital on Saturday (at which he performed well, good job Cory!), and after a brief trip home where we packed some stuff and stuff, we headed out for a hardcore shopping spree.

If you see me wearing new clothes that actually fit in the coming weeks, it is because we dropped $400 at T.J. Maxx, Kohls, and some other store the name of which I can't remember at the moment. Got lotsa stuff. Dress pants, jeans, shorts, dress shirts, button downs (long and short sleeved), a couple of ties, a bunch of tees, some unmentionables... Just lots and lots of stuff.

I'll try not to stand in the mirror and say things like "Damn! I'm a good lookin' man!" but I make no guarantees.

THEN, since the rest of the evening was supposed to be about Jo in appreciation for the hard work that is Motherhood, I gave in to her request to visit Ginger in the ICU at the U of M before dinner, so she knew we didn't abandon her. We drove out that way (St. Paul campus) and a dog that was so excited to see us again she couldn't stop shaking.

Afterwards, we used my phone to look up the closest Joe's Crab Shack (for a crab legs feast, Jo's FAV) and were directed to the one in Roseville, a mere 5 miles from the U. Once we got there, we pulled into an empty parking lot and found a "FOR LEASE" sign on the front of the building! SO, with the phone, we found a Red Lobster instead, where we had a big dinner and a couple drinks. I behaved with Tilapia and Vegetables broiled in a bag, and misbehaved with three cheddar biscuits and a couple stuffed mushrooms. MMMMMM, cheddar biscuits.

Anyway afterwards we checked into the DoubleTree on 394 and 100, where I'd secured a hotel room to help Jo escape her domestic shackling if only for an evening, and enjoy some focused attention from her hubby.

That's ME.

We hit the hot tub until they closed at 11:00, then headed up to the sixth floor for the night.

After sleeping in and gettin' ready, we left to pick up Ginger at the U and bring her home after her three day hospital stay, then headed up to Jo's parents to wish Diana a happy mother's day and to pick up the boys and head home.

After an afternoon snooze, I made up a TASTY asian salad with grilled salmon and homemade improvised dressing for the official mother's day dinner. I was proud, and the Jo and the chilluns did love it.

Called Mom and tried to call both Grandmas and Brady (his birthday was Saturday) but caught none of them real-time. Mom called back, which was nice, but didn't get to connect with either Grandma. Brady, I hope you enjoyed your song.

So, I'm now fully blogged for the weekend.

Not much to report today. I've had a pretty low-key day at work, and am soon to head home and figure out dinner. If my foot doesn't hurt too bad, I'll do some treadmilling while watching Heroes. YAY!

Okay, 'sall for now. Hope your day and weekend was swell, and happy belated mother's day to all you who've endured the rearing of a child.

Saturday, May 12, 2007

Day 132 - Hello Weekend!

156.5 on the scale. 75 minutes on the walking path, 5.5 miles, 4.4, 100/70.

So, unfortunately, Cory didn't make it to the point of falling asleep in the treehouse because his allergies were bugging him something fierce (he'd forgotten to take his pills in the morning). He had to throw in the towel and sleep inside.

Cole, on the other hand, made it through the night without even realizing Cory wasn't there.

Jo and I didn't feel comfortable with the boys outside and us inside, so I pitched our tent, ran some electricity out there, and I slept out back with a lamp and a book and a few beers so I could keep an "ear" on Cole.

I'd figured what would surely happen is that Cole would wake up at some point in the night and realize Cory wasn't there, and then sneak inside to his room, leaving me out in the freakin' tent in the backyard by myself like I was in the dog house or something. But alas, we both slept through the night like rocks (although I did hear Cole come out a few times and tinkle in the forest!).

I just found out this morning that I'm going to be a childless bachelor all of Memorial Day Weekend. Jo will be visiting a friend (Hi Jenny!) in Detroit, and Jo's parents want to take the kids with them on a "Wandering Wheels" square dancing camping extravaganza for the whole weekend. (Funny, eh? Yeah, not kidding.)

It is not often at all that three solid days of Bret Time fall in my lap.

What to do with that time?... What to do... Road trip? Last minute airline fare somewhere completely random? Hang at home, shingle the treehouse roof?

I dunno.

This morning I got my hairs cut by my Vietnamese old barber, Triba ("Hallo Friend! Hehehehehehehehehe") and we're about to head out for Cory's violin recital, after which Grandma and Grandpa take them overnight.

Enjoy your Saturday!

Our House, In the Middle of the Trees

The boys are sleeping in the treehouse tonight for the first time! They think it is pretty cool, so much at least that they thanked Daddy again, which Daddy thinks is pretty cool...

Day 131 - TGIF

155.5 on the scale. No walk, which I miss already.

Ginger still at the U in the ICU. No school decision as of yet, however another tour has been scheduled for next week Wednesday. No significant weight gain. New project opportunities popping up everywhere. HAM website about to be updated. Shipments of software upgrades and equipment all in transit and trickling in. Third review lunch of the week today; fourth lunch out in one week.

Weekend holds a violin recital, an expensive shopping spree for a suite of clothing that fits, a Mother's day date out without children tomorrow night, and if I can swing it, I'd like to get the kids sleeping out in the treehouse tonight for the first time ever. :) All I have to do is put the railing board on the top bunk. If I accomplish that tonight, we'll probably have a nice campfire after Cory's gymnastics.

Oh, and I think I'm gonna walk my ass off tomorrow morning to make up for no walk today. For my spirit, not weight loss.

Hope you have a good Friday!

Day 130 - Post-Goal Day

155.5 on the scale. 65 minutes on the walking path, 5.0 miles, 4.6, 100/70.

Not much to report this morning. Walk was beautiful as usual, iPod treated me well.

Ginger's still sick today, so Jo's taking her to the U of M to get her checked out. She ate a big bunch of double-chocolate M&M brownies that Cecil (the cat) knocked onto the floor, and it messed with her liver something fierce I guess. Been puking and such for 3 days, even after spending a day at the vet on an IV yesterday.

I've got a couple of meetings today, nothing too terribly out of the ordinary. Looking forward to an even-keel kinda springtime day.

Hope you have a good one!

Day 129 - Mission Accomplished!

155.0 on the scale. 65 minutes on the walking path, 5.0 miles, 4.6, 100/70.

Oh, good day!

I honestly didn't expect it to happen this morning after last night's beers and midnight-snack bowl of cereal. However, after the invigorating morning walk, I was gleeful to see what I saw on the scale when I got out of the shower.

BING!

And so I snapped a pic of my hairy foot on the scale. No photoshop work there! (Neither to the number, nor the hairy feet unfortunately!)

So, now the whole dynamic of this blog changes.

I got called "too skinny" today. In fact, the exact words were "bordering on male-model-skinny."

(Yes, I blushed. I'm so not that good looking.)

But what I'm saying is, now it becomes about maintenance. As one's weight usually does, I expect to fluctuate day-to-day within the range of 155 and 160, depending on market conditions.

If you read this blog from this point on, it isn't because you're on the edge of your seat about whether I'll hit a goal on a particular deadline.

It is because you're my mom and I don't call you enough.

Or maybe it is because you're with a rival agency looking to get in my head so you have a competitive advantage.

Or maybe you actually think I say something interesting once every 20 entries.

...

No matter. Everyone is welcome on the internets.

If you keep reading from here on out, I ask only two things of you:

1) Leave a comment every now and then whether I know you or not, and...

2) Slaughter me with comments if you see the weight climbing over 160.

The 1's and 0's you leave will keep me honest.

Woot! Woot!

Be it widely known, the wall has been touched!

Quote of the day, from Alexander Pope via The Te of Piglet: "Some people never learn anything because they understand everything too quickly."

Day 128 - So Almost There Almost

156.0 on the scale. 100 minutes on the walking path, 7.5 miles, 4.6, 100/70.

SOOO FREAKIN' CLOSE!

Walking Thoughts

Man, I SO love where I live. The sound of toads croaking, birds, a sweet waft of lilacs every hundred feet. And the misty morning smell of Lake Minnetonka.

I am brimming with appreciation.

Exercise Report

45 minutes on the treadmill, 3.5 miles, 4.6, 100/70.

Heroes = tasty.

Day 127 - 155 or BUST

158.0 on the scale. 65 minutes on the walking path, 5.0 miles, 4.6, 100/70.

As I said yesterday, though I missed the arbitrary deadline I'd set for myself, I'm not stoppin' until I touch the 155 wall or I'll be pissed at myself and eat and eat (and eat) until I slide back into the 190s.

Although, as you can see from the weight reporting the past couple days, I'm sort of sliding backwards after HamJam.

Are you looking at my gut??? Are you???!

I'm working on it!!!

HamJam 2007 was a great success, thank you to all who helped make it happen and to all the good peeps that attended. Ya'll how to party. Props to Malmstrom for locking the place up with me and Jo at 2:30 or so.

Our collective efforts as a company this morning went to setting up our workstations and continuing to set things right after the festivities. I spent a fair portion of Saturday morning cleaning stuff up with Shirleen, and setting desks and dividers back up that were cleared for the dance floor. Props to Shirleen for all her hard work pre and post Jam.

I'm quite certain the best pictures of the night will probably have come from the dance floor. I'll post a couple of them when I see 'em.

Anyway, ONWARD, eh? Who's with me???

Deadline missed, but I'm going 'til I touch the 155 wall.

Stay tuned.

Quote of the day, overheard in our building lobby just now: "Nobody could possibly do or say anything to take me out of my good humour."

Day 123 - Happy Birthday To Me!

156.5 on the scale. 66 minutes on the walking path, 5.13 miles, 4.6, 100/70.

Got a birthday present from the fam this morning. It is a little device with GPS that tells you how far you're walking/running and how fast you're going and all that.

SWEET!

Also got a phone call from Dad this morning who wanted to be the first (after Jo of course) to wish me a happy birthday. Thanks Dad! Also heard from Jo's mom right after I hung up with Dad.

So, walking this morning felt tougher than usual. I think it might have something to do with the 11+ miles I walked yesterday. All things considered, I'm having myself some eggs and toast this morning.

It's my birthday for cripes sake!

Then I'm having a lunch with another fellow business owner, Kristina at which I'll behave with some soup and/or salad.

Anyway, a good day to one and all! HamJam is tomorrow!

Exercise Report

About 100 minutes on the walking path, 7.4 miles, 4.6, 0/0.

Went too far tonight, I kinda hurt. I went the other direction towards Excelsior, as far as The Old Log Theater: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=918279

The iPod was on FIRE tonight. The highlight was the Bee Gees.

Had a good day today. Ticked some more things off the list, helped where I could on other projects, sent out a reminder email for HamJam, had a good lunch with Rysavy... Nuttin to complain about.

I started The Te of Piglet last night. I think it'll be a good read, just like the Pooh book. In fact, I think it might be a better read judging by the first couple chapters.

Don't be surprised if I start to tell you that you should read that too.

Man, I'm so freakin' predictable.

Day 122 - Google Gives Life

157.0 on the scale. 65 minutes on the walking path, 5.0 miles, 4.6, 100/70.

Well, I'm getting closer, eh? That's called sticktoitiveness.

So, I was pretty much right on about distance of my morning walk routine. This morning I finally clicked on a link that Alexis sent me (thanks Alexis!) that allows you to map any path and have it tell you how far it is, with a GoogleMaps API thingy. It took me awhile to figure out how to use it this morning, but once I did, I found out I walk 5.0251 miles each morning!

Here's my path: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=915466.

I can even tell now that I burn almost 600 calories on the walk.

Wow, the internets are a wonderful thing, and life is complete once more.

Day 121 - Happy May Day!

157.5 on the scale. 70 minutes on the walking path, dunno how far, dunno how fast, however I'm starting to think it is about 5 miles, so I could do the math based on that assumption, but does it really matter? :) Oh, and 100/70.

It was a nice walk this morning after the rain last night. That smell -- damn that's a nice smell. Saw two bunnies, heard birds chirping, ducks and geese, and the iPod pulled out a few great ones for me this morning too. See, those moments are all around us at all times. We just have to notice them.

This morning, Jo and I are touring another school, this time the public middle school (since Cory's not far from that playing field). Next week I think we're touring Beacon, a public charter school. So the search for what feels right continues.

I've been reserving outright judgment until I see enough of the comparative landscape.

I think work holds a calm day for me today, mostly. Have a few things I need to tick off the proverbial list, and then a capabilities presentation later today.

I finished The Tao of Pooh last night. Next comes The Te of Piglet, which I'll start soon I'm sure.

Happy Birthday to my Aunt Laurie!
